Some people maintain control of their faculties while they're jacked in. My chauffeur for the night doesn't have that ability. She sits insensate in her seat and fills her helmet with drool and uses the teletext display awkwardly bolted to the dash when she needs my attention.
I worry that the display is stuck. Malfunctioning. Then I remember who I'm talking to. She wants ANOTHER BEER. Again.
I flip the cracked visor open. The flushed and cherubic face inside gives no indication that she notices. Her glassy potemkin eyes focus on nothing while she peers out at the world through CCTV and salvaged FLIR pods. I tilt her head back and mate the rim of the can to her lips.
The treads underneath us eat masonry. Bone dust. Something big that goes crunch and sends a jolt up through bogey and suspension and padded seat. The contents of the tallboy shoot out the little opening with the jolt and splash all over her face.
That, finally, gets a smile.
