[Firelock 198X] 1/100 Scale Mini — Lupar Chasseurs

At midnight we are assembled in the captain's dugout. A cup of cider to each man and we are shown the tunnel that will lead us to the staging point. Vallo glances at me nervously. He has shadowed me from the depot. It will be his first attack.

We crawl nose-to-tail through a stifling winding void whose dark confounds even our eyes. No man speaks. Stripped of all senses we move alone with our thoughts. Abruptly we stop. Above: a sliding of planks. A cut square of starshot night sky and the smell of fallen leaves. Fighting-darkness. We rise from the earth.

The cool breeze strikes us. In our blood a contact shoots home. I feel as if I am observing a tape recorded by another's eyes. The eyes look at Vallo. His face is neither tenser nor looser than before. But it has still changed. He has ceased to be human.
